Driving and Governing the Green Transition: Local, National, European and Private Actor Roles and Responsibilities

A high-level symposium bringing together researchers, policymakers, and business leaders to examine how different actors shape and steer the green transition. Join discussions which will address industrial policy, resilience, and innovation across local, national, and European contexts.

The House of Governance and Public Policy (GaPP), in collaboration with the House of Innovation (HOI) and Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets (MISUM) are pleased to invite you to this high-level symposium, bringing together researchers, policymakers from the EU, national and local governments, and business leaders to discuss how collaboration across sectors can accelerate and govern the green transition.

This symposium aims to bridge research and policy perspectives on the governance of the green transition.

Keynote speaker: Professor Frank Geels, Alliance Manchester Business School & Distinguished Visiting Professor at the House of Innovation.

The Swedish context is set by Sara Modig, State Secretary to Minister for Energy, Business and Industry.

Panel discussions will feature leading academic experts as well as public and private leaders on the following themes:

Panel 1: Funding gaps in the green transition

Moderator: Gustav Martinsson, Professor of Finance, Stockholm University & MISUM, SSE

  • What are the main challenges in funding for industrial projects and public infrastructure needed for the green transition?
  • Can the risks and rewards from public and private investments in the green transition be shared by public and private actors, local or national?

Panelists:

  • Carl Bennet, Founder and owner of firms such as Getinge, Elanders, and Lifco.
  • Henrik Lundh, Head of Alternative Investments and Real Estate at AMF Pension.
  • Kristina Sundin Jonsson, Director of Skellefteå Municipality.
  • Philip Ajina, CEO Infranode.

Panel 2: Orchestrating Market Changes for the Green Transition

(Moderator: Suvi Nenonen, SSE professor of marketing)

  • How can regulation best spur innovation and long-term investment across sectors to facilitate the green transition?
  • What would it take to think and act in systems rather than silos – can market transformation be orchestrated at scale?

  • How can long-term commitment in policy be realized considering political risks, public legitimacy, and the need for stable regulatory frameworks?
