New ebook on challenges to sustainable cities

Sustainable cities have become a focus of international research and policy in the past few years. David Simon, who heads Mistra Urban Futures, has been the editor and a co-author of a book on how urban development can take place in an accessible, green and fair way. It is available for download, free of charge, with open access.

Rapid urbanisation in China, India and many other low- and middle-income countries poses new challenges, both local and global. One is the threat of climate and environmental change to the world’s towns and cities.

In the book Rethinking Sustainable Cities: Accessible, green and fair, a number of leading researchers provide an in-depth picture of how urbanisation can take place in a way that fosters sustainable development, instead of being a threat to it. A recurrent theme is that urban development must take place in three central dimensions: towns and cities must be accessible, green and fair.
