Final report shows need for interplay between trade and environment

Research from the ENTWINED programme has now been summarised in a synthesis report. It shows the need for international global policy on trade and the environment to become more integrated if climate-changing emissions and other environmental problems are to be solved.

ENTWINED (Environment and Trade in a World of Interdependence) was under way from 2007 to 2013. This initiative, headed by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, investigated the importance of private and public environmental strategies for trade systems from various points of view, especially in connection with emissions of greenhouse gases and other cross-border problems.

The main message, now that the research has identified which environmental strategies work and, when they fail to work, what the obstacles are, is the need to integrate trade policy and environmental policy better so that the world’s countries can embark in earnest on remedying numerous environmental problems.
