SIRP programme director to head Umeå School of Business and Economics

Lars Hassel, Programme Director of Mistra’s Sustainable Investment Research Platform (SIRP) research programme, is to be the new Rector (Dean) of the Umeå School of Business and Economics (USBE) at Umeå University. He is Professor of Accounting at Åbo Academi University in Finland, and carries out research on sustainable investments and businesses.

Lars Hassel has been associated with USBE, where he holds an Adjunct Professor position, since 1998. He is also a member of the PRI Academic Network, a global initiative for sustainable investments, and a former visiting professor in Malaysia, France, Russia, New Zealand and elsewhere. USBE, which he is now to head from 1 August 2012, is part of Umeå University and has just over 170 employees and 2,000 students from all over the world.

Mistra’s Sustainable Investment Research Platform (SIRP) programme, for which Lars Hassel is Programme Director, has received SEK 101 million from Mistra. It contributes research on how investment stakeholders in the financial markets can influence businesses so that they move towards a greater emphasis on sustainable development.

Among the topics studied are companies’ reports, analysts’ valuations, and asset managers and investors’ behaviour and portfolio choices based on sustainability criteria. The results from these studies are of great interest to researchers, as well as business owners and politicians.
